Advanced Program Mathematics for the IEB Curriculum
Program SynopsisAdvanced Program Mathematics is an extra subject and not a tuition or extra class in school mathematics. Over and above school mathematics, the subject serves as a stimulant and enrichment programme for students who are already identified as achievers in mathematics. Formal testing and examinations are written and students are promoted to the next grade in the programme. The program is open to students who consistently achieve a minimum of 75% in school mathematics.
Advanced Programme Mathematics allows learners to adjust to more abstract concepts and thinking exercises to help better prepare students for university. Cognitive and attitude adjustments in addition to the conceptual enrichment help to better prepare students for their first year at university, especially in fields that require exposure to mathematics such as Engineering and Science. accreditationThe AP Mathematics Examination is offered at the end of grade 12 by the Independent Examinations Board (IEB). AP Mathematics is a accredited by the South African Qualifications Authority as an NQF Level 5 mathematics enrichment program. The AP Mathematics examination itself is also quality assured by Umalusi. Learners are registered at the beginning of the grade 12 academic year for the AP Mathematics examination. A certificate and statement of results is then issued by the IEB upon successful completion of the examination.
Curriculum ContentAlthough some content may be familiar with school mathematics, the AP Mathematics Curriculum addresses these topics in significantly more detail: Algebra, Calculus, Financial Mathematics, Modelling, Statistics and Probability, Graph Theory, Matrics, Computer Number Systems.
The Grade 9 AP Mathematics Foundational Year also serves as an ideal bridging course for the transition between grade 9 and grade 10 mathematics. It may also challenge students who may potentially be bored with school mathematics. The benefits of AP Mathematics are mainly long-term. The course is an investment in the intellectual and thinking abilities of the student. The program is currently open to learners in grades 9, and first enrollment learners in grades 10 and 11. |
